Tried It: Sugar, Sugar

In a new series on Seattle Boutique Blogspot called "Tried It",  I'll share my most intimate, Seattle-centric beauty adventures with you! Put your seatbelt on and get those ear muffs ready, because this is going to get personal.

In this edition, we cover sugaring. It's one of my latest beauty obsessions because it's a total timesaver. Translation: I don't have to shave every day. As per usual, I didn't dip a toe into this new beauty adventure. I went all the way. In this case, that means full Brazilian at Sugar Sugar on Green Lake.

An alternative to traditional waxing, sugaring is a method of hair removal that uses all-natural and organic sugar. The sugaring paste is water-soluble and can be used over and over on different parts of your body. After the treatment, the entire ball of sugar is discarded. No more strips. No excess waste.

Not only is sugaring better for the environment than waxing, but I've been told it hurts less. While I've never had traditional waxing done, I have in fact been sugared a few times now so I can tell you that it hurts, but not as much as you might think. In fact, I found that the sheer anticipation of the pain was way worse than the actual sugaring. The women that work at Sugar Sugar are incredibly efficient, which means that each treatment is super quick and before you know it, you're a hairless wonder. The results speak for themselves and not having to shave every day has been priceless, especially during the summer. Expect to pay around $75 + tip for your first Brazilian service and then $55 for maintenance appointments that are scheduled within five weeks.

Sugar Sugar also stocks some great skin care lines including Serious Serum, which is a Portland-based beauty brand. Founded by Shannon Conley of Urban Waxx, this vegan product was originally developed to help prevent and treat ingrown hairs after wax treatments. The product uses alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), green tea, chamomile and aloe vera to soothe skin and can be used on the face, bikini area and even on your under arms to battle ingrown hairs. So whether your wax or get sugared, this product is a must-have. I'm a big fan of Serious Serum and use it on a daily basis. I like it even more now that I know it's from the Pacific Northwest.

1. Take Tylenol at least 30-minutes before your appointment to take the edge off.
2. If you're really apprehensive about your first treatment, use a numbing gel with at least 5% lidocaine to help take the sting out. Sugar Sugar sells a product called Numb-It, but you can get it cheaper on Amazon if you plan ahead.
3. Avoid ingrown hairs post-sugaring by exfoliating in the shower, using a serum with AHA and keeping the bikini area moisturized.
